Pocket guide 1

Sales tax, tips and discounts: three quick calculations

Most everyday percentages can be done in your head with one trick: find ten percent first.

Reading 1

Find ten percent

On a $40 bill, ten percent is $4. Move the decimal one place left and you are there.

Reading 2

Build from it

Twenty percent is double: $8. Fifteen percent is ten percent plus half of it: $4 plus $2, or $6.

Reading 3

Discounts

If an item is thirty percent off $60, ten percent is $6, so thirty percent is $18, and the price becomes $42.

Reading 4

Sales tax

Rates differ by state, county and city, and some items are exempt. A receipt shows the amount charged. We offer no tax advice.
